Over the past decade, Mobile apps and User Experience has changed completely. First, we used to have simple apps that did very little. But with the Smartphone revolution in the past decade, everything has changed. Your daily chores, social interaction, to business strategy all depends on these mobile apps. Giving us a much better user experience. But there is a new technology in town which is slowly and steadily changing everything, i.e., AI.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a computer science technology that gives machines the capacity to act and respond to commands in a much more humane way. AI is able to behave more humanely because it adopts human reasoning and can learn from previous user experience and interactions. In simpler terms, AI analyzes previous experiences and then change their response to better suits users.

AI uses different techniques such as machine learning, deep learning, to parse data, learn from it, and then make a prediction about the future.

  • Many of the product that you buy is suggested by AI. Companies such as Amazon are using AI to suggest products and deals to users.
  • Many experts, including Stephen Hawking, is worried that AI will replace humans in many industries in the coming future and even fight back like the terminator.
  • Some researchers experts said that AI would be only 1/10 smart as humans by 2035.

Types of Artificial Intelligence

AI is a very controversial topic, and it has spared a lot of heated discussions. But broadly speaking, AI is categorized into four types. These AI are the type of AI system that you see today to sentient systems which do not exist as of yet. They are –

  • Type 1: Reactive machines — These are AI, which react to the current scenario by analyzes all the possible moves and then chooses the best one. A famous example of a reactive machine is Deep Blue, an IBM chess program that beat chess champion Garry Kasparov in the 1990s. Deep Blue analyzes its own and opponent moves and chooses the most strategic one. However, it can't store past experience; Google's AlphaGO is another example of such reactive AI.
  • Type 2: Limited memory — These are AI systems which do all the above things that reactive machine does, but it also stores memory. These Ai's are used in self-driving cars that use past observation to make a prediction like changing car lanes and more. But the memories stored are limited and not permanently stored.
  • Type 3: Theory of mind - This is a psychology term that means understanding others' beliefs, desires, and intentions that impact one's decision. Such AI would understand you and then make a decision. Such AI doesn't exist as of yet.
  • Type 4: Self-awareness — This is the type of AI which you see in movies which have self-conscious, self-awareness, have emotional feeling towards others. Thankfully, we are very far from creating such AI.

Why is Artificial Intelligence Important to You?

AI has a very important role to play in mankind. It is the technology that can give more output in less input. First and foremost, AI will take over tedious jobs, but it will also increase efficiency. Farmers can use robots to plant and cultivate seeds and then use drones to watch over their field. This would exponentially increase the output. Similarly, advances are also in progress in other fields like education and healthcare. But it will also create a lot of high-skilled jobs and make things a lot more affordable for the people.

  • Chatbots: These are AI-powered robots which can interact with users in a way that human can. They learn from previous experiences.   • Voice recognition: Now, we have many mobile apps that use AI to recognize your voice. You can even unlock or give commands using this feature. Apple is the pioneer in this field as it has integrated Siri with Apple mobile devices for a very long time. She can recognize your voice and personalize the phone on its own for better user experience.

These are just a few popular AI applications that are being used in the current market.

  • User engagement: Most mobile apps fail due to their lack of user engagement. AI is currently being used to analyze user behavior to provide insight into the user. AI can tell mobile apps what users are looking for and how they are using their apps. Mobile developers can use this information to make changes for better user engagement.
  • AI helps to make a better decision: AI can analyze large bits of data that humans can't. Imagine there is a large sum of data on the feedback of users on the app. You can technically make a program to read all those feedbacks. But AI can change the game by reading them in a humane way and give developers a much better conclusion. This can later be used to make a well-informed decision.

  • Personalization with AI: Mobile is already marketized as a personalized for each user. However, most apps are the same for everyone. There isn't much personalization on an individual level. AI-first records user behavior and then change their app or suggest change according to the user usage for a better experience.
  • Context-driven user experience: A mobile can sense your location, but it doesn't change the user experience to a large extent. But AI-based algorithm can use the user location along with several vital aspects and then come up with user-centric messages and recommendations. For example, if you are a road trip, your mobile AI can recommend apps that can be useful to you or send a notification that there is no fuel station in the next 100 odd km.
  • Mobile can connect with users better: As AI can analyze big amounts of data, mobile apps can connect with users on a deeper level. They can store their user's behavior and give users more control over themselves. Apple's Siri and Amazon's Alexa are already in the process of doing so. Things will only go ahead from here for AI.
